In a mixed choir of caressing angels, Taylor Prendergast explores fantastical desire in her solo exhibition Heaven is a Shadow with Half Gallery in NYC this May. In Prendergast’s new work, we cross into a dreamy Arcadian landscape rendered in ethereal hues and biblical onyx shading. Accompanied by varied four-legged strays, these brawny, genderless cherubs keep close with sweet affection—some donning chicanerous grins.
Echoing Francisco Goya’s aquatinting technique, Prendergast extracts darkness in gradients to illuminate her subjects, creating a velvety, voluminous texture. Movement in the wings suggests an urge for flight, yet they remain grounded, unable to satiate an undercurrent desire for skyward ascendance. Like Tantalus, we are tormented by the mirage of bliss, left perpetually yearning.
